M2: Compare Traditional Media Job Roles With New Emerging Job Roles
In this report, I will be explaining how the development of technologies has expanded the job sector. I will compare older roles with the emerging job roles in the media industry. I will explain what each job role does and how it relates to my media product.
Hard skills and soft skills refers to what skills you need to get a job in the industry. Hard skills refer to the programmes and technical aspects you know. For example, a graphic designer would be able to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Soft skills refer to your personality of the person. For example, I can say I am ambitious, hard working, great at multitasking...
Traditional Job Roles:
Project Managers
Project Managers became a job in the 1960s. In this traditional job role, you are expected to lead the team by creating a plan and keeping them organised. Project managers create GANTT charts and other planning documents, organise who is doing what task and making sure the project is completed on time. They may also create a SWOT analysis to evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for the project and the team. Project managers must also create budgets and keep an eye on what everyone is doing.
Project managers must know how to use the Microsoft Office applications. Excel is a spreadsheet tool that you can use to create GANTT charts and analyse data. They also must be aware of other project management tools such as Monday.com.
Project managers must be able to multitask, have good communication, be able to time manage well and have good decision making skills.
I will need to have a project manager for my HELP-R 5000 robot project to ensure that the team are on the same track and they complete the project on time. I will also need the project manager to present our robot to skateholders and sort out our finances.
Software Engineers
Jobs for software engineers started in the 1960s. Software engineers write the code needed to create applications, softwares, websites, games etc. In this job role you would be writing lines of code and testing it, evaluate softwares to make sure that it runs correctly.
Some hard skills they must know are how to use the different programming languages such as Python, Javascript etc. Programmers should also know what programming software they can use. They can either be specialised in one field or in several. For example, a software engineer might know how to program websites and games.
Programmers must have excellent problem solving skills to be able to spot errors in the code. They must be able to work to deadlines and have good communication skills since they may be working in a team.
I will need a team of software engineers to help program my HELP-R 5000 robots. I will need them to program the robot itself to ensure it can work and I will also need some AI engineers to create the AI for my robots.
UI Designers
UI stands for User Interface. This role has been around since the 1980s. UI designer designers help to ensure that the product looks great, a website is an example. UI designs need to meet with clients to understamd how they want their product to look. They need to be able to create wireframes, prototypes etc to plan the design of the product. Furthermore, UI designers need to understand how the product will look cross platform and also redesign media products to ensure they are on trend/up to date.
UI designers must know how to use the Adobe Suite. They must have creativity, an attention to detail and understand the conventions of media products.
In terms of my HELP-R 5000 robots, UI designers could help design the appearance of the robot. The uncanny valley effect is something I want to avoid with my robots. This theory states that the more an object looks human, the creepier it feels to us. I want my robot to feel warm and welcoming but I also want it to look robotic so we can differentiate humans from robots. I turned to other robots out there for inspiration. Sophia is a communications robot that has a human like face. She can pull different facial expressions. Alita from the movie Alita: Battle Angel is a robot that has a human styled face and a robotic body. I want my robot to follow that.
New Job Roles:
Prompt Engineer
New AI software such as Chat GPT have been all over the news recently. Prompt engineers work very closely with AI. They input key words and descriptions into an AI generator to help produce the work they need. This is a very new job role in the AI industry that most people could do. They will also need to communicate with clients to understand what they would like.
Prompt engineers must have a basic understanding of how AI works. They must have great english skills and attention to detail.
A prompt engineer may be good for my HELP-R 5000 robots since my robots will contain AI and this would be a great way to test and train them.
The image above is an AI generated illustration I prompted myself using and AI tool called Midjourney. I wrote my prompt into the AI machine and this is what I ended up with.
Social Media Prosumer/Marketing Manager
A social media prosumer is an individual that creates content and shares this on social media platforms. This is a relatively new job that globalisation and the internet has gave us the ability to do. Lots of companies now advertise their porducts on social media now and they also interact with their audience. Social media proumers may either sponsor the company's products or create posts in collaboration with them. Large social media influencers may use sponsorships in their videos or posts.
A social media prosumer must know how to use social media. They need to understand analytics to target the products to the correct audience. These prosumers need to be persuasive, likeable and business savy.
I will need a marketing team to help reach my target audiences of my HELP-R 5000 robots. My target audiences for this product are other businesses in the public sector since the robots can help them.
How do they compare?
As you can see, there has been a major shift from traditional job roles to newer job roles. Technology is more widely available and this has influenced the types of jobs we can have. The rise of AI and technology will continue to create new job roles in the sector. The expectations of older job roles may change slightly as we become more reliant on technology. Marketing has changed from just being print to being across social media. Software engineer jobs are going to be more widely available as technology such as robots and AI expands.
