P2: Explain the Changing Media Marketplace and How This Has Provided the Opportunity For the Proposed New Product
Globalisation is a term used to explain how media companies and technological advancements such as the intenet have changed the way that we consume, produce and distribute media products on a global scale. With the development of technology and the media, large conglomerate media companies have aquired smaller comapanies. Companies that only targeted one media sector now have opportunities to create a wide range of media products.
The long tail theory (Chris Anderson, 2004) says that mass and niche media products are now more accessible than ever thanks to globalisation. Originally, we could only find popular media products in shops (HMV, Sainsburys, Tesco, Asda...) in the form of DVDs etc. However, the internet has created a space where mass and niche products get as much recognition as each other. Even influencers, famous and upcoming, have the ability to get recognised because of social media platforms such as YouTube and Instagram. Mass and niche products earn the same money as each other since audiences can choose what they want to watch. For example, YouTube and Netflix will suggest videos to you (web 3.0) based on your interests. Instagram and Facebook will personalise your feed based on what content you like to watch.
Disney is a great example of companies that started off in one sector have branched to gain subsidiaries in different sectors. Disney specialiss in the movie and TV sector. They started off creating short cartoons, thier first animated film being Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. They continue 2D and 3D animated movies and series as well as live action. The company is very famous and their movies and widely loved by adults and children alike. Disney own lots of companies such as Marvel,
The internet and globalisation has allowed Disney to create a streaming service for all of their movies and TV shows, Disney +. On this streaming platform, you can watch nearly all of the disney movies and also movies and series that Disney own such as The Simpsons. You do need to pay for a monthly or yearly subscription to access the service. This platform is for everyone as there are lots of different age ratings for these movies. For example, the Deadpool franchise is for 18+ audiences however you can stream this on Disney +.
Furthermore, they have their own TV channel called the Disney Channel. This is aimed towards children and was the home to many famous TV series such as Hannah Montanna, Wizards of Waverly Place...
Lots of companies have used Disney licensing to create games. Disney Dreamlight Valley is a game created by Gamesloft. The game is playable on the Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Steam, Epic Games, Microsoft and Playstation stores. The game released on the 6th of September 2022.
The Evolution of Robots Due to Globalisation
The first robot was called Unimate which was produced in 1954 by George Devol. This robot essentially worked as a mechanical arm that could help with the manifacturing process in factories. Since then, our robots have advanced rapidly.
Globalisation has changed the marketplace for robots. Globalisation has allowed us to work together and share ideas with each other across the world by collaborating online. It has also allowed us to transport materials and creates healthy competition between robotic companies.
Robotics was originally a niche area. This is because robots are expensive to make and they couldn't do much beforehand. Plus, we didn't have the materials to make them. Now you can see advanced robots being showcased online. The internet and globalisation spread awareness of these machines. Our knowledge of technology is expanding everyday and we are constantly having breakthroughs. Robots are now using AI to comunicate with humans and perform tasks.
Sophia is a robot that can talk to us. Her face was created using frubber and you can see her circuit at the back of her head. Sophia uses AI and speech recognition. She can also show human facial expressions.
These Atlas robots use AI to help them peform parkour tasks such as running, jumping, doing backflips etc.
To conclude, companies have changed the way they produce and distribute products. Globalisation has helped us consume media products on a global scale. For this unit, I have created a new robot called HELP-R 5000, my company is called Ro-boot Technologies (a combination between the words reboot and robot). My robot could possibly exist in the future and will use AI like these robots. I will use a combination of deas from these robots to create my own technologically advanced robot.
